SociaGuys encourages Londoners and visitors to request events SociaGuys, a social company for discerning gay men, has recently launched a service encouraging Londoners and visitors to take control and request events they would love to see provided in London. Rob Frost, co-founder, explaining the background to the service said, “Being gay in London has changed massively over the last 25 or so years. Places like Soho were used as safe havens to protect gay men and women from the taunting and retribution of homophobic individuals. In these safe havens one culture that grew consisted of excessive drinking, drugs, and unprotected sex carried out in blacked-out bars and clubs. However, this was not representative of the whole of the gay population, but is a perception that is still tied to being gay.” “People who are gay can also feel pressurised by a ‘gay myth’ that you have to live as wildly as you can in your 20s and that you are practically past it in your 30s.” “The Internet has and is changing gay life massively. In the past you could only really meet people in gay bars and clubs. Today, the Internet is allowing gay men to meet like-minded individuals in a whole array of settings.” “The Internet is also helping change gay lifestyle. There is no longer the pressure to live all your life in your 20s and then retire to the countryside. Against common misperception, many gay men want to commit to their partners, have kids and enjoy life until the day they die.” “Teenagers and adults, of all ages, are meeting each other on social networking sites and don’t feel the need to go exclusively to gay bars, clubs and saunas. However, gay people still want to meet other gay people for friends and potential partners offline, but in different and varied settings.” Ali Bell, co-founder, went on to explain, “There is still a heavy focus of events in London around clubbing and drinking all tending to be in the same venues. Life in London shouldn’t be like Ground Hog Day; going to the same venues, listening to the same music and having the same conversations.” “Every week/month should be different. There should be something exciting and different to look forward to. There are so many great venues in London, loads of talented musicians, actors, comedians, creative people, etc. There are thousands of combinations of possible events. It’s time to make them happen.” Rob Frost said, “We launched the service called ‘Your Requests’ because we would like Londoners and visitors to take control of the type of events provided in London in order to increase the variety and choice. After all, there’s no point companies providing events if customers don’t want them.” “Everyone has ideas for events they would like to see provided. In the past, it was very difficult to make these ideas a reality because of the barriers of cost and getting enough interest. If people want masquerade balls, murder mystery evenings, 1920s dinner-dances, picnics, boating, etc, they should be provided.” “Bringing large numbers of like-minded people together gives customers the power – CrowdPower - to make things happen. Londoners and visitors can tell us what they would like to see provided and how much they are willing to spend and we see if we or other companies can organise the event.” Rob Lucas, co-founder, added, “We really want to help people have great memorable experiences of their time in London. In the current climate, people really want to make sure they are getting the best value for money and increase their networks of friends.” “New events can only be provided with the support of Londoners and visitors, so please have a look at our website www.SociaGuys.co.uk , submit your requests or sign-up to our newsletter to keep up-to-date with new events.” Notes for editors About SociaGuys SociaGuys’ services are built around helping Londoners and visitors, who happen to be gay, get the most out of their valuable social time whilst in London.
